The attached article explains how to get connected to an Adtec unit with a third party FTP Client (Filezilla) and a third party Telnet Client (PuTTY).

FTP is the default protocol used for transferring files to and from an Adtec unit.  It can be used to transfer Firmware Upgrade files (.tgz) or content (.mpg, .dvc, etc..).

Telnet is the default protocol used for access to the API .  The API allows for advanced configuration or firmware upgrades.

Please view the attached PDF to connected to your player with FTP and Telnet.  Getting connected is the first step for a manual firmware upgrade or advanced configuration with the API .

note:  For more advanced usage of Filezilla, visit the Filezilla wiki http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/Using .  For more advanced usage of PuTTY, visit the PuTTY manual http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0.60/htmldoc/

Alternative Telnet/FTP Methods:

Some users do not have access to internet to download Putty or Filezilla near their Adtec units.  We highly recommend using Filezilla or Putty compared to the native Windows tools.  A USB Thumbdrive can easily transport these tools to another computer if needed.

For Windows XP native telnet alternative:
1.) Click on Start -> Run..
2.) In the run window type,  telnet x.x.x.x   .  where x.x.x.x = the ip address of your unit.  Windows will echo all input so please ignore 'double typed' characters

For WindowsVista telnet alternative:
Windows Vista disables Windows Telnet by default as a 'security' measure.  PuTTY is highly recommended for WindowsVista/7.
1.) Enable the Telnet Client by going to Start -> Control Panel
2.) In Control panel choose the 'Programs and Features' icon
3.) Choose 'Turn Windows Features on or off'
4.) Look for the 'Telnet Client' option, put a check mark in it and choose OK
5.) When done you can click on Start and type 'telnet x.x.x.x' in the run box where x.x.x.x = ip address of your unit

MAC OSX has Terminal/Telnet built in, PuTTY not required:
The MAC OSX built-in terminal and putty programs are recommended over PuTTY for API access
1.) Open Finder and open the Applications -> utilities -> Terminal application
2.) Type,  telnet x.x.x.x   where x.x.x.x is the IP Address of your unit

Linux/Unix operating systems have Terminal/Telnet built in, PuTTY not required:
1.) Depending on distrubution and OS ,  Terminal is usually found in the Main Menu -> System -> Shell
2.) Type,  telnet x.x.x.x  where x.x.x.x is the IP Address of your unit

For Windows FTP Gui Alternative:
1.) Open Windows Explorer (Double Click My Computer or Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Windows Explorer)
2.) Type in the ftp credential and IP in the address bar in the form of,  ftp ://adtec:none@x.x.x.x   where x.x.x.x is the IP Address of your unit.
3.) Press enter,  You can now browse the unit and drag/drop files to/from unit

For Windows FTP command line Alternative:
1.) Click on Start -> Run..
2.) Type ftp x.x.x.x where x.x.x.x is the IP Address of your unit
3.) When transferring media files, please go to BINARY MODE.  Type 'binary' to change to binary mode.  Text files can be transferred in ASCII mode.
4.) put filename.ext or get filename.ext will put or get a file from the unit
